Tips for safe Winter driving

Before you know it, those long dark Winter evenings will be here. Sure, there’s Halloween, Bonfire Night and, whisper it quietly, Christmas to look forward to. But for many of us, our daily commute can suddenly be plunged into a dark, wintry blur. Vehicle repairers report as much as a 10% increase in accidents in the two weeks after clocks go back. As a reminder, that’s Sunday 26th October.

Whilst your clever smartphones and laptops will update themselves, we suggest updating your journey planning and driving style too.

Here are some tips to help you drive safely after the clocks go back:

  • Give your car a checkup. Make sure the tyres are inflated, the oil and coolant are topped up, and the lights and wipers work.
  • Turn on your headlights early. It’s better to be seen than not seen, even if it’s not completely dark outside. Aim to turn them on about an hour before sunset, or just switch them to auto.
  • Slow down and back off the car in front of you. It takes longer to react and stop in low light.
  • Keep your eyes peeled. Pay attention to pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers, especially in poorly lit areas.
  • Don’t rush. It’s better to be late than in an accident. Give yourself extra time to get where you’re going, especially if you’re driving in unfamiliar territory.
  • If you are driving an Electric Vehicle, familiarise yourself with all the necessary recommendation on how to maximise battery life and range.
  • Keep your breakdown and insurer’s helpline numbers handy, so if the worst does happen, you’re just a call away from safe recovery and a lift home!

Stay safe!
